Begin With the End In Mind

It is a new year, you want to take on the world, start a list of resolutions and the opportunity is endless. If you are anything like me you may find yourself starting your year with overwhelming, daunting, yet exciting thoughts about what you want to accomplish:  fitness challenges, career ventures, mastering new skill, nixing bad habits, outdoor adventures, weight loss, travel etc.  The spinning tornado of thoughts has yet to touch down, and you are not alone. According to The Journal of Clinical Psychology 50% of the population are making resolutions and setting out to do great things!

Where do you begin? Well, with the end of course! You have ideas but they are not quite shaped. There is a brilliance lying just beneath the surface, but no focus, or on the contrary you are laser focused but may be a bit paralyzed.  Here a few techniques I plan on using this year to get going, but the real challenge is sticking with it.

Outcome and Intention – Anyone can write a list. The trick is to tie it together and make it real. What does it look and feel like when you are done? Jotting down the outcome should get your mind jazzed and energized to simply begin.

Dial it Down  – Stick to five big resolutions to start. If there are more than you can count on one hand you may be boiling the ocean. And your list of five will take on sub-lists, they always do!

Be Accountable – How are you going to avoid ditching one or all of the five? Make it known! In a world where we are constantly over sharing, one of your resolutions may one worth publishing, declaring  via a social outlet, joining a group, or rely on one close person to hold you accountable.

One of my resolutions is to manage new communication projects and write engaging inspirational content, with the end looking a lot like what you see here… “Brallier’s Blog.” There it is, out there for all of you to hold me accountable.  What is my end game? New business ventures, endless likes, comments, and shares! And more importantly injecting a little positive motivation in your step. Now I am jazzed! Hopefully you are too.

    Great post, Erin! I agree on all points, especially on accountability.
    For 2016, one of my personal goals is to complete a 5K. It will not be easy and I must comply with Doctor orders but I am committed to getting back in shape and building strength.
    I look forward to hearing what others have for their goals! Cheers to both accomplishment and success!

    Inspirational message that reminds us you can accomplish anything you put your mind to! Looking back, after my ACL surgery I would have NEVER considered running a half marathon. I took a leap of faith for “our” 35th bday and continued to build onto my mileage slow and steady to run my first half. Now I am averaging one a year!! It is time to pick my 2016 race and start my next fitness goal! Great reminder! I can’t wait to hear more to keep us all inspired. #proudsisterreachforthe stars!!!!!
